The Garage is a company who thrive on bringing the community together to make a change for life, not just for now. We take dance, music and fitness to the extremes, pushing styles while maintaining a professional technique. Fusing styles together and bringing urban flavour to classical styles makes them fresh and current, while developing on the style's technical range. We bring you the three Fs — something Fresh, Funky and most importantly, Fun!
The Garage will provide the community with activities that stretch the mind, not only the body. We work by being inclusive and pushing ourselves to work within some of the most deprived and diverse communities, focusing on challenges, encouragement and unity for others to achieve their own personal goals, by delivering the three Ds — Dynamics, Drive and Determination.
Street Dance is used to describe dance styles that have been developed outside of dance studios, such as hip hop, breaking, locking and popping, but now The Garage is bringing Street Dance to the studio to ensure the finest technique is instilled to achieve the freshest dancer about.
These classes blend original hip-hop, house locking & poppin wacking, and tutting styles to create something fresh and funky, concentrating on creating a fusion of modern commercial moves with the latest banging beats.
Gymnastics are exercises developing or displaying physical agility and coordination. At the Garage we use these skills to develop trick work for crew material.
Breaking is a street based dance style that incorporates intricate body movements, coordination, strength and stamina. This style uses the entire body to developing and creating new ways of moving: that is the beauty of it — anything goes!
Contemporary Dance is normally thought of as a fusion of classical ballet with modern dance. But The Garage’s contemporary classes are based on improvisation working from a technique beginning while it also employs contact, release, floor work, partner work and characterization.
We work from the emotion of the piece, rather than the choreographic content of the piece (moves). These classes are exciting to be a part of as it is a collaboration of dance styles and is devised to create something explosive and expressive.
Baby Ballet class is the starting block for the early year dancer. The whole purpose of these classes is to develop the young dancer's love for their hobby, focusing on fun but also instilling basic technique at a young age.
Skills that will be developed during these classes are coordination, communication, listening skills, working as a team and stretching their working memory.
All these classes are about developing, engaging and stimulating adults, giving people something to focus on which is a positive step to becoming a healthy person!
Afro Mix is an effective dance work-out comprising a mixture of Afro-Caribbean dance styles, such as dancehall/reggaeton, coupé décalé and azonto as well as elements of street, house, vogueing and commercial.
It mostly draws on pelvic and hip movements combined with travelling, thus engaging your lower body and your major thigh muscles (such as quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes).
In this fun fast paced musical theatre class you will learn techniques in signing, dance and drama. You will then learn jazz and ballet technique and following that you will then be taught choreography to a diverse range of musical theatre numbers. Whilst focusing on singing and drama techniques, this class has a strong emphasis on preparing you for performance opportunities.
We also provide private lessons in dance – street, break and house, and singing – pop, r'n'b and musical theatre.

My name is Kayleigh Gage: if I had to describe myself in one word it would be that I am a grafter. I'm a 25 year-old, with lots to give. I have recently moved back to Durham from London, where I trained and worked for a number of years as an actor, singer, choreographer and dancer. I am a highly motivated and dedicated individual who thrives on pressure, hard work and responsibility. I worked and gained a lot of knowledge and experience, which enhances not only my performance skills but also my communication and organisation skills, working with diverse people within the community in a positive way while pushing them and myself to achieve something more and unique.
Let me start by letting you know about me. I have taught and choreographed for many companies and schools for the last 8 years, both in the North East and in London. My performance background goes right back to being a child with classic styles such as ballet, tap, jazz and disco. i then went on to GCSE Dance, a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts, then on to a BA (hons) degree in Dance. Then finally drama school at London School of Musical Theatre, where I trained as a dancer, singer and actor and had the privilege to work with some of the most innovative and inspiring members of the industry for a number of years as a professional performer.
