Luncheon Club

Time: Wednesdays (except school holidays) from 11:00 a.m. (lunch at 12 noon).

Cost: £3.00 for a two-course meal, £1.00 subscription.

Originally the Luncheon Club was formed and operated by the Probation Service as a means whereby offenders could work out their Community Service hours and also provide a valuable service for the local community. In 1995, however, because of a change in policy the Probation Service withdrew this provision and we were left with the problem of 'What are we to do now?'

After trying various other options for a short period of time which were not very successful, three valued members of the Management Committee, who had the skills in their personal careers/lives, decided that they would take over the provision of meals and organisation of the group, and the rest, as they say is history. Here we are 19 years later, still going from strength to strength providing home cooked nutritional meals every week (which are thoroughly enjoyed by members) and the opportunity for members to socialise with their peers and enjoy a game of bingo and occasional outings. All our helpers are volunteers who willingly give their time to serve the local community. In 2011, in recognition of our service to the local community we were awarded Durham County Council's Chairman's Medal.

Unfortunately, we are victims of our own success as we always have a waiting list, so if you are over 65 years of age, a resident of Horden and are interested in coming along, just contact the Centre staff who will pass your name on to the co-ordinator. You may have to wait quite a while but you will get a place eventually.

We meet every Wednesday (except during school holidays). The charge is £3 for a two course meal and a cup of tea/coffee and £1 which goes towards the cost of outings and events. The group is self-financing but it is worth every penny — just ask our members what they think!
